A poison called love

Standard

How do we get stung
All covered protectively
Fur, snakeskin, wool and even metal
Yet one sting penetrated all

Cupid’s arrow must be potent enough
Knocking senses numb
Even reasoning fled, dumbness was stubborn
The poison gradually spreads

Threatening yet strong
It grows day by day
It does not kill
Rather made stronger

Gradually, the deserters left
Together they stabilize the poison’s effect
A poison that didn’t kill or knock out
The poison called love.

My Crush

Standard

Like a dolt, I smile when I see you
Senses taking leave of me
The reverse is the case for you
Then my mouth gets shut

Roof clings to the tongue’s tip
My heart misses beats
Your absence becomes killing
When shall I see you again

You do not know
You cannot know
I may even be shamed if you do
For it is a man’s world after all
Where ego and pride are siblings
And women can’t get what they want or deserve

LoveyDovey

Standard

Silly. Stupid. Dumb.
These are just my words
To show you how much I care
About what you make me do

Soft. Shy. Sweet.
Are ways you’ve built me
To react when I see you
Almost intuitively I start

Run. Relax. Revel.
Things I want to do with you
Savouring the moments I get
Treasuring the secrets we share

Love. Like. Learn.
I yearn to continue forever
By your side no matter what
For you have captured my heart

Abeke Awelewa

Standard

Abeke, my maiden
Beautiful daisy among daffodils
Your tresses allure me

SONG OF THE UNLEARNED

Standard

Oh!Was it not yesterday?
That Arike grew into a woman
How time flies for us
Arike leaves for elsewhere

The first suitor comes bearing goods
Arike’s love and all he claims to want
Seeking for her from herself
And not her family

Eledumare, can you imagine?
The stupidity of mankind is so great
Arike desires to go with him
Her lessons not fully learnt
Disaster lurks

Arike, my daughter
Without doubt, you are beautiful
Yet Oba Oke knows too
That beauty without brains is naught

Asake is married, you remind me
Yet I ask of you
Is Asake happy in her home
She cannot show you her scars
For shame withholds her

Your lessons are important to learn
Abeke learnt hers and is prosperous
Ajoke did same and even taught herself more
Why should you rush into your forever?
When all you have left is forever?

THE WAR

Standard

A war rages
Estrogen battles testosterone
Humanity watches on
Ever on, never seeming to end

What happened to the heart
The mind will never know
The bond shared lies thin
Ready to break

Reasoning seems silly
A strong leash we must have
Draw them apart
For two unlikely peas in a pod are they

Of what end are these battles
Many lie wounded when it seems over
Many manage to leave at their wits end
Yet, it is but a cycle
